La Maison de Nina

France 2005, 112 minutes
Dir. Richard Dembo
In French with English subtitles
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Drama / War

Topics: Indigenous & Minority Cultures, Period 1940s.

Aroview: Quietly accomplished French drama focused on the relationships within the fragile structures of the 'houses of hope': houses run by surrogate mothers to care for orphaned Jewish youngsters post WW2.

The contrasting views on Jewish pride between the secular French Jews and the concentration camp refugees offer a heart-wrenching depiction of their struggle to re-engage with one other, while a fluid, almost documentary-style narrative reveals less obvious truths.
