Sicilian Girl, The
Aroview: A vivid, level-headed account of Mafiaso intrigue, based around real events surrounding a young woman’s testimony in court against Sicilian gangsters responsible for her family’s death.
Anchored by Veronica D’Agostino’s enthralling lead performance, this addresses the standard thematic motifs behind mob movies (loyalty, betrayal, revenge) matter-of-factly and with a seriousness that belies the sensationalism usually associated with the genre. If a little dry at times as a courtroom drama, D’Agostino complex central character delivers the necessary emotional clout to complement the film’s grave study of justice, vengeance and martyrdom.
