American Cannibal

USA 2006, 91 minutes
Dir. Michael Nigro, Perry Grebin
Genres: Documentary

Topics: Reality TV, Bad Taste, Showbiz.

Aroview: On the surface an expose of America’s insidious entertainment industry, this compulsive video diary of a failed Reality TV series challenges the authenticity of documentary filmmaking itself, blurring the line between what’s geunine and make-believe.

Two struggling upstarts sell out to the promise of easy money through a Survivor-style pitch, striking upon adult movie rep Kevin Blatt (of Paris Hilton sex tape infamy) who takes their original concept (virgins competing to sleep with a pornstar) and flips it into a show about tricking contestants into eating one another. Far fetched and contrived, yet not nearly sensational enough (and therefore, perhaps a little too real) to convince as an outright mockumentary, we recommend overlooking the film’s questionable lunacy for its uglier and more telling insights into making it as scriptwriter in Hollywood.
