Tropic Thunder
Aroview: Ferociously funny action comedy from actor-director Ben Stiller, following a group of pretentious actors on a mission to create the biggest budget war film ever, until they find themselves engaged in real-life combat.
The premise is a cracker and the characters are a scream; Stiller as a washed-up action hero looking for critical acclaim, Jack Black as a low-brow, drug-addled comedian, and especially Robert Downey Jnr., unrecognizably brilliant as an Australian thespian who is method acting as an African-American. Also memorable (and well cast!) are Tom Cruise as an unfeasibly grotesque Hollywood producer, and Matthew McConaughey as a smarmy, opportunistic agent.
After a golden run of big comedy hits, this may well be Ben Stiller's Pièce de résistance, outstripping even his cult fave ZOOLANDER in ambition and in the laughs department, and rivalling TEAM AMERICA as an irreverent parody unafraid to bite the Hollywood hand that feeds.
