Charlie Wilson's War

USA 2007, 97 minutes
Dir. Mike Nichols
Genres: Drama, Comedy / War

Topics: Politics, Period 1980s.

Aroview: Tom Hanks spearheads this crisp, ever-timely political sideswipe, about a real-life Texas congressman who, together with the financial aid of an anti-communist socialite (Roberts), and a can-do CIA man (Hoffman), secretly funds the Afghan resistance against Soviet invasion during the 80s.

Scripted by WEST WING dynamo, Aaron Sorkin, who has an undeniable gift for literate gabbing, though his politico-journo doublespeak might be too esoteric for the untrained ear, and even resemble a dirge for those seeking usual Tom and Julia fare. The facts of the story are fascinating and the implications are serious, but one wonders whether a documentary (without its tongue-in-cheek) on the subject would have served it better.
