Aroview: This impressively subtle portrait of a tortured artist stars Alec Guinness as a deteriorating painter whose pursuit of creative perfection has him on a path to self-destruction.

Guinness also wrote the screenplay and performs tremendously, though never once monopolises proceedings, allowing other finer aspects of the film to break through.
