Aro Recommended Master of the Flying Guillotine

Hong Kong 1975, 93 minutes
Dir. Yu Wang
In Mandarin with English subtitles
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Cult, Action/Adventure / Martial Arts

Feat. Yu Wang

Aroview: Legendary martial arts anomaly cited by Quentin Tarantino as his favourite kung fu film, this stars (and is directed by) Jimmy Yu Wang as a one-armed boxer pursued relentlessly by blind assassins who wield the film's unmistakable "flying guillotine" with devastating prowess.

Unhinged even by kung fu cult standards, the film defies all conventions of logic, including gravity, while maintaining a garishly unique set of tricks seen plagarised in the mash-up that was KILL BILL. Featuring a disproportionate number of armless men – Yu's nemeses deductive powers involve killing every one-armed man until he's left – this is far from robotic stuff, and ranks as a wildly delirious, absurdly comical standout in a saturated genre.
