Aro Recommended Der Heilige Berg

aka: The Holy Mountain
Germany 1926, 106 minutes
Dir. Arnold Fanck
Rating: [PG]
Genres: Classics, Action/Adventure / Silent Cinema

Aroview: One of the landmark films of German Cinema, this is chiefly remembered as the awesome debut of Leni Riefenstahl who later became chief filmmaker for Adolf Hitler.

Riefenstahl plays a dancer trapped in a love triangle between two alpine explorers, which culminates in some brilliant location footage of skiing and death-defying mountaineering - no paper-mache sets here! Visually, the expressionist compositions begin to verge into a sublime and romantic vision of natural splendour, a vision remaining somewhat at odds with the melodramatic storyline.
