Varian's War

USA 2001, 121 minutes
Dir. Lionel Chetwynd
Rating: [M]
Genres: Television, Drama

Topics: Period 1940s.

Aroview: Mostly satisfactory telemovie which deals with the intriguing real-life case of Varian Fry, an American journalist who in WW2 helped smuggle over 2000 'degenerate' artists out from the clutches of the Nazis, including the painters Max Ernst and Marc Chagall.

Despite production restrictions and the shifty European accents of the cast, this remains an appealing story, with Hurt giving one of his more adventurous performances of late.
